HYDROCELE

A hydrocele is a sac filled with fluid that forms around a testicle.

Symptoms:
Swelling
Infertility

Diagnosis:

Treatment:
Surgery – hydrocelectomy ( evertion of sac)

HERNIA:

A hernia occurs when an organ or fatty tissue squeezes through a weak spot in a surrounding muscle or connective tissue called fascia.

Common types of hernia:
Inguinal (inner groin)
Incisional (resulting from an incision)
Femoral (outer groin)
Umbilical (belly button)

CAUSES OF HERNIA:
Lifting heavy objects
Constipation
Persistent coughing or sneezing
Obesity

INGUINAL HERNIA:

Intestine, omentum and rarely bladder protruding into the scrotum.

Types:
Common types
Direct hernia
Reducible hernia- may be pushed back into the abdomen, unless very large.
Irreducible hernia - Signs and symptoms of bowel obstruction eg. nausea and vomiting.
Strangulated hernia - entrapped intestine has its blood supply cut off - surgical emergency.

Diagnosis:  Clinical; Ultrasound

Surgical management – Hernia repair with mesh;
Laproscopic TEP; Laproscopic TAP

UMBILICAL HERNIA:

Bulge around the belly button (umbilicus).

Diagnosis:

Treatment:
Hernia repair – open with mesh; Laparoscopic with mesh

STRANGULATED HERNIA:

Symptoms:
fever
severe abdominal pain
tenderness in the abdomen
vomiting
redness

Treatment:
Emergency Surgery is the only option.

FEMORAL HERNIA:

Women are more likely than men to suffer from a femoral hernia

Treatment:
Surgical repair.

VARICOSE VEINS:

Varicose veins are enlarged, swollen, and twisting veins, often appearing blue or dark purple.

RISK FACTORS:
pregnancy
standing for long periods
family history of varicose veins
obesity

SYMPTOMS:
Aching legs with heaviness
Varicose nonhealing venous ulcers
swollen ankles
Skin discoloration

VARICOSE VEINS:

Color duplex ultrasound scan - measure speed of blood flow.

Treatment for varicose veins:

Complications

LIPOMA
It is a harmless deposit of fat under the skin. The common sites include back, abdomen, neck, shoulders and extremities.

Symptoms:
Usually asymptomatic
Painful only if it grows into nerves underneath the skin.

SEBACEOUS CYST

They are cysts which originate
from the hair follicle or the epidermis.

Symptoms:
Asymptomatic
Occasionally pain and discharge if infected.

DERMOID CYST

A dermoid cyst is a sac like
growth that is present at birth.

CONTENTS:
Structures such as hair,
fluid, teeth, or skin glands

Excision of the dermoid cyst

THYROID SWELLING

A goiter is an abnormal enlargement of the butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck.
The most common cause of goiters is lack of iodine in the diet

Symptoms
A visible swelling with tight feeling in your throat
Hoarseness of voice
Difficulty swallowing

Risk factors:
A lack of dietary iodine
Age more than 40 yrs
Females
History of autoimmune disease
Certain medications like amiadarone and lithium.
